Introduction
Incorporated in 1899 as a town, Kearny was named after the
Civil War General Phillip Kearny and has a population of roughly 40,000. It is
separated from Jersey City by the Hackensack River while the Passaic River
separates it from Belleview and Newark. The city has a total of area of 10.2
square miles and divided into three parts: Kearny Point, the Kearny Uplands,
and the Kearny Meadows. Kearny’s textile industry began in 1875 when the Clark
Thread Company of Paisley, Scotland established a factory there. Newark Liberty
International Airport is located several miles outside of Kearny and the New
Jersey Transit provides bus services to the Port Authority Bus Terminal in
Midtown Manhattan as well as other New Jersey communities.

History
The area including Kearny was originally purchased by Major
William Sandford in 1668 who named it after his hometown, New Barbados Neck. It was purchased from the Hackensack Indians for
twenty English Sterling Pounds thus making Major Sandford the founding
resident.

Along the Passaic River is a collective of parks, Riverbank
Park. The most notable of these is Bunnyland Hill – which was named after a
