History
There is a lot of speculation on how Hoboken came by its
name. One such theory is that it was derived from the Lanape Indian term “Hopoghan
Hackingh” as they had referred to the area as the land of the tobacco pipe. It was discovered and claimed by an
Englishman name Henry Hudson who sailed there for the Dutch East India Company
on the ship, Half Moon in 1609. The
famous term “Heaven, Hell, or Hoboken… by Christmas” was coined by General
“Black Jack” Pershing as the city was the embarkation point for the soldiers
entering WWI.
